Beginning Band

Course Length: Full year
Grade: 7th or 8th

Requirements: Please submit Elective Selection Online Form by 5/28/21. Instrumental band class designed for first-year beginners. Students will learn to play woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments. Aspects of musicianship taught here are music reading, rehearsal skills, ear training, and music theory. No music experience is required to register for Beginning Band. Instruments will be provided. Students will showcase their learning in concerts throughout the year. Please note *Cal Middle School instrumental band classes are designed and intended to be two (2) year programs for students who are interested in advancing to high school band programs via recruitment, audition, or placement by teacher’s recommendation. However, 8th graders are welcome to enroll in beginning band.

Advanced Band
Teacher: Mrs. Wong
Course Length: Full year
Grade: 7th or 8th

Requirement: Please submit Elective Selection Online Form by 5/28/21.  Must have previous experience of at least 1 full year with an instrumental ensemble, OR 6 months private lessons on a band instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, or percussion),  OR successful completion of Cal’s Beginning Band. Instrumental band class designed for students with experience. Requirements for advanced band is one year of elementary band, OR six months private lessons on a band instrument, OR successful completion of Cal’s beginning band. Instruments used in this class do NOT include guitar or piano. Aspects of musicianship taught here are music reading, rehearsal skills, ear training, and music theory. The work in the class will be showcased in concerts throughout the year, and students will have opportunities to learn and perform in optional groups outside of class like the all city honor band. This is a high school preparation class designed to let students transition directly into high school band programs. Please note *Cal Middle School instrumental band classes are designed and intended to be two (2) year programs for students who are interested in advancing to high school band programs via recruitment, audition, or placement by teacher’s recommendation.
